Khan Academy Sign-Up (Semester 1)

Everyone at Collegium (Building 515) will use their @ccs.us GMail Account to create an Account on KhanAcademy.Org! Make sure that you finish updating your profile once you sign in. Go to your Profile screen and Add Mr. S as a Coach by entering the Khan Academy Class Code Below!


Every student can use Khan Academy as an online tutor at home. You can pick just about any Subject and Level and view video lessons, answer practice questions, or ask a coach a question. There are tutorials for all of your subjects on this fantastic resource! Make sure you check out all the classes you can complete and help yourself with!

Next, go to http://typingweb.com, and create an account.  Go to START TYPING and begin the lesson with the HOME KEYS.  Spend the rest of the class time working on your typing skills.

Tomorrow there will be worksheets to help you get better at typing.  Sit up straight, fingers on the home keys, and really try to learn to type.  This is a skill you will use forever!

Scholars will create an account on Khan Academy so they can work from home, invite other teachers to help coach them, and generally allow them to learn about many different classes on their own. This is an introduction to Blended Learning, and starting them on the path to become life-long learners. They can access many different classes and RTI Math and ELA programs. There is also content available in the arts, science, social studies, and many other topics. Scholars will be able to log in and work on various programs independently.

National Security Agency (NSA) DAY OF CYBER Program

Today everyone will log into the LifeJourney website and start to discover possible jobs in the field of cyber-security.  Please go to the following website, and use the Class Code below to sign-up. ​


This is a website sponsored by the NSA to help students learn about possible future careers there.  You can sign in anytime and complete the levels on your own, outside class.  You will participate in the NSA Day Of Cyber​.  The NSA Day of CYBER is a free online program that allows students to experience a day in the life of the nation's top cyber-security experts - in just a short amount of time.

Students use an online learning site called LifeJourney to complete, independently, a review of the skills and abilities needed for various jobs and careers at the National Security Agency (NSA).  Students will be able to complete the learning objectives outlined in the online curriculum, identify and discuss topics related to cyber-security, electronic and systems security, signals interception, and cryptology.

Photo Collage Project (PIXLR.com)

ASSIGNMENT: CREATE, ADJUST, ASSEMBLE and SHARE a Photo Collage as listed below using pictures (Must Conform To Collegium Charter School Standard Use Guidelines) and use PIXLR.Com to change them and make them your own. Follow the directions below:

Mr. Scribner's Example Photo Collage



You must create a Photo Collage using 4 pictures of your choice. You need one picture for each of the following 4 themes: FOOD, SPORTS, MUSIC, and PERSONAL GROWTH. Each picture must be chosen from Google Images and manipulated with PIXLR.COM in some way. DO NOT JUST ADD PICTURES WITHOUT ADJUSTING THEM. You must label your pictures in some way, and the words "Collage by (your name)" must be on one of the pictures somewhere.

THEME DEFINITIONS:
FOOD - Choose a food you like to eat or make.
SPORTS - Pick a sports team or player to highlight.
MUSIC - Share your favorite song, singer, or type of music. 
PERSONAL GROWTH - Pick an organization or group that you believe strongly in.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Choose 4 Pictures from Google Images
2. Save 4 Pictures to Desktop
3. Open PIXLR.COM
4. Load each Picture into PIXLR.COM Application from Desktop
5. MAKE CHANGES TO EACH PICTURE
     a. You must add some text, a background, and change the color or another feature for credit.
6. Save Formatted Picture to Desktop...Repeat Until All 4 Pictures Have Been Edited
7. Open PIXLR.COM and Select PIXLR EXPRESS
8. Choose the COLLAGE Option from the Main Menu Screen
9. Add each of your 4 Pictures to the Collage (Any 4 Picture Layout Is OK)
10. Make any final changes or additions.
11. SAVE your Collage to your DESKTOP
12. OPEN Google Drive and UPLOAD your Photo Collage. SHARE it with Mr. S at hscribner@ccs.us for credit.

Photograph Manipulation Introduction (PIXLR.com)

Today we will be working online with pixlr.com.  This is a powerful website (CLICK HERE) to help you work with and manipulate digital photographs.  Please use the time today to explore this software using pictures from Google Images. We will eventually be learning to take pictures and create a photo project book for the entire school.  This will be an artistic project aimed at helping you to use photography, journalism, and Microsoft Publisher.  We will be learning to use this software so you can create your own part of our Yearbook later this year.

SOS.FBI.GOV / NSTeens Challenge

Today you will work on the FBI SOS Program. Please go to the link below and follow the instructions on the Student Section. You must work on each task in the 7th or 8th Grade Section. You will have time in class to finish some of the levels.

Tomorrow, when you feel you have gone through all the levels, you must ask me for a code to take the TEST! You will receive a grade for the TEST and I will be notified when you have completed the program. This is an ongoing project until the end of Semester 1. If you do not complete this program prior to the end of Semester 1, you will take a zero on this project. Take your time and Good Luck! -Mr. S

Rule of 12x12x12 / Multiple Intelligence's

12 by 12 by 12 is the distance you are being judged by the people you meet every day of every week of every year of your life.

Your first impression starts 12 feet away. This is the distance people see what you are wearing and how you are acting. This is the first chance you have to make sure that people see you in a positive, accepting light.

At 12 inches away you are now about to speak. People will notice the minute details of the way your face looks as you smile, frown, or grimace. People are judging your looks, your demeanor, and the way you carry yourself. The way you shake a hand, smell to others, and present yourself are now under the microscope and you should be aware that what you are about to say will forever place a note in people’s head about your level of maturity.

Finally, the first 12 words you speak are a reflection of your heritage, upbringing, and education level. Whether you like it or not, the person you are interacting with is taking a mental picture of you for future reference. What kind of picture have you given them? How can you make a difference in how you appear?

The mark we leave on the world is a made up of the thousands of appearances in other people’s memories. How you are perceived by others is the only yardstick we are all measured equally by. Make your impression a positive lasting one with others, and you will make your world a better place live in.

Scholars will then review and discuss information about Multiple Intelligence's and complete a short questionnaire to determine what primary and secondary abilities they may posses. How Do You Learn Best? Learning Syle / L&R Brain Survey / Executive Functions / Typing Test

Today you will learn about HOW YOU LEARN BEST! Please follow the directions below to complete a series of survey's that will give you some insight on your Learning Styles, your Left/Right Brain Dominance, and your Executive Functions. You may choose to watch the videos associated with each survey (with headphones only), or just complete the surveys themselves. Please fill out the form in class, and complete the ONLINE SURVEY at the end. Make sure to complete both for credit.  See you tomorrow!

1. LEARNING STYLES: Many people recognize that each person prefers different learning styles and techniques. Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles. Others may find that they use different styles in different circumstances. There is no right mix. Nor are your styles fixed. You can develop ability in less dominant styles, as well as further develop styles that you already use well.

2. LEFT/RIGHT BRAIN DOMINANCE: According to the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. For example, a person who is "left-brained" is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective. 3. EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS: The Executive Functions are a set of processes that all have to do with managing oneself and one's resources in order to achieve a goal. It is an umbrella term for the neurologically-based skills involving mental control and self-regulation.
